What is Emmaus?

The "Walk to Emmaus" name is drawn from a scriptural passage from the Gospel of Luke in which two travelers, leaving Jerusalem and walking to the town of Emmaus following the Resurrection, encountered Christ, but did not recognize Him until he later revealed Himself to them.

A Walk with Christ

Chapter 24, verses 13 through 35 of the Gospel of Luke [read it] tells of the risen Christ appearing to the men as they walked. When Christ joined them, though, they did not immediately recognize Him. While they made their way to Emmaus, Christ explained that the scriptures had ordained that Christ should suffer and so enter His glory. That evening as they sat to eat, Christ took the bread and blessed it, then broke it and gave it to them. When he did so, the two men's eyes were suddenly opened and they recognized him as the risen Christ. They immediately rushed back to Jerusalem to tell the others.

What Happens on the Walk to Emmaus

The Walk to Emmaus is a 72-hour cloistered spiritual renewal experience. The weekend begins on Thursday evening and lasts through Sunday evening. Persons attending the Walk to Emmaus spend three busy - but very enjoyable days - on a metaphorical "pilgrimage" with Christ. Attendees live and study together with music, prayer, worship, and discussion.

Discussions center on fifteen talks given by laity and clergy. These talks present the theme of God's grace and how that grace comes alive in the Christian community and expresses itself in the world. Attendees also discover how grace is real in their lives and how they can share it with others. Participants share in the daily celebration of Holy Communion, and begin to understand more fully the presence of Christ in His body of believers.
